Xiropotamos Bridge


The stone bridge Xiropotamos, near the village of Seniko in the Ioannina region, spans the stream of the same name and stands a short distance from the Bridge of Tyria at the location known as Chelimodi. It is a representative example of Epirus stone bridge architecture and once served as an important crossing connecting the villages of the Douskara area with the settlements around Olytsika, facilitating local movement and communication.


The bridge is multi-arched, consisting of one large central arch and two smaller auxiliary arches. The main arch rises to approximately 10 m in height with a span of about 15 m, while the bridge deck is around 3.2 m wide. Its stone-paved surface and low protective parapets preserve the traditional character of the structure.


Although there are no confirmed records regarding its exact construction date or founder, the bridge belongs to the wider network of historic stone bridges of Epirus, which were closely linked to the region’s trade routes and pastoral activities, shaping the mountainous landscape of Ioannina over the centuries.

Aziz Aga Bridge



Aziz Aga bridge, constructed in 1727, is located near the village of Trikomo. The biggest Bridge in Macedonia, it is a triple-arched Bridge with a length of 70m and a height of 15m. In the middle of the Bridge a bell used to hang to warn passers-by of strong winds. Tradition has it that Azis Aga entrusted a known stonemason with the construction of the bridge. However, because of the high and long arch, the Bridge fell twice, as soon as they removed the forming blocks. Azis Aga threatened the master builder with decapitation if the Bridge fell again. During the last removal of the blocks, the latter sat on a slope facing the Bridge and watched in a terrified state. The Bridge did not fall and the master builder was generously paid for his work.

Bridge Katsogiannis


Katsogiannis Bridge was built around 1800 over the river Velonia. Today, two of the three stone arches of the Bridge are extant, while the third was reconstructed using concrete. The stone part of the Bridge reaches a length of 38m, and the total length of the Bridge is 50m.

Bridge of Dasyllio



Dasyllio or Paniomageros Bridge is a single-arched Bridge constructed in 1910 by Georgios Tzioufas, who came from the village of Dasyllio. The Bridge is not used any longer, but it is still well-kept by the locals of the nearby villages, Kalloni and Dasyllio, who consider it the jewel of the area.

Bridge of Portitsa



Portitsa bridge, built at the root of the gorge under the village of Spileo, prevails the stone landscape of the area. It is a double-arched Bridge with a length of 34m. It was built in 1743 by masons from the area or from Ioannina, and financed by the Holy monastery of the Assumption. The Bridge used to join Spileo with Krania and it is the most photographed of the stone passages in Grevena.
For photography lovers that are ready to “spend” reels of film and digital cards, the gorge and the Bridge are ideal models.

Bridge of Stavropotamos


Stavropotamos bridge with four arches and a length of 47m is one of the most recent bridges in the prefecture of Grevena. It was built over Stavropotamos, a tributary of Venetikos.

Bridge of Ziakas


Ziakas Bridge is a double-arched Bridge and it was built in the 19th century over the river Velonia. It stands next to the new road bridge, just before it ascends to the village of Ziaka. The road that went through the Bridge was called “Vasiliki Strata” (Royal Walk) and it connected the village with Grevena.

Kagelia Bridge


The Kagelia Bridge has two arches and is built over the river Venetikos. The time of construction is not known. Once a basic access route to the villages of Mikrolivado and Monahiti, nowadays it rarely has the opportunity to “experience” the sounds of footsteps and humans crossing.

Kioupri Bridge


The stone bridge of Kioupri in Edessa is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the “city of waters.” Its name derives from the Turkish word köprü (“bridge”), while in local memory it has become known as “Byzantine,” although more recent studies and its construction features suggest a later date, most likely during the late Ottoman period, between the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is a single-arched stone bridge, approximately 28 m long, built by skilled stonemasons from Western Macedonia.


The bridge is located in the western part of Edessa, at the point where the Edessaios River (Vodas) enters the town. Beneath its arch flowed the waters of the river, which branched through the urban fabric of Edessa before continuing toward the city’s famous waterfalls. The presence of water shaped the identity of Edessa over time, supplying mills, workshops and later supporting its industrial development.


The bridge played an important role in communication and transportation, linking agricultural lands beyond the river and possibly standing along an older route associated with the passage of the ancient Via Egnatia.

Liatissa Bridge



Liatissa bridge is located near the village of Spileo, over the river Velonia, and it was constructed in 1800. It is also known as the “kleftis bridge” or the “jump of the kleftis”, because tradition has it that some thief pursued by the Turks, jumped at that point from one bank of the river to the other.

Pasha Bridge


At the border between the prefectures of Grevena and Kozani, we can find Pasha bridge, constructed in 1806, that was an important passage over the river Aliakmonas. The Bridge had six arches and a length of over 100 metres, but it was blown up by the British on their retreat in 1941, to obstruct the advance of the German forces. The legend that follows it is similar to that of the Arta bridge; the story relates that the master builder had to build his wife in the foundations of the Bridge so that it became secure.

Roman Bridge


One hundred meters from the national road, amongst the cultivable extents, is standing still in the passing of time, although waterless, the roman bridge that used to link ancient Pydna with Thessaloniki.

Spanos bridge


Spanos bridge, built over the river Venetikos, with a total length of 84m and a span reaching 10m at its highest point, is the longest Bridge in the prefecture of Grevena. According to the date inscribed on its arch, it was constructed in 1864 by Mustafa Pasha, aga of Argyrokastro, also called Spanos. Next to the bridge, there is an inn where the caravans to Thessaloniki or Ioannina stayed overnight.
