dISCOVER PRESPA
Prespa lakes is a mountainous lake area of outstanding natural beauty, on the northwestern border of Greece with Albania and North Macedonia, at an altitude of 857 meters for the Little Prespa and about 852 meters for the Big Prespa. The two lakes that can be distinguished are Megali Prespa, which belongs to Greece, North Macedonia and Albania, and Mikri Prespa, which occupies mostly Greek territory (about 43.5 sq km), with a smaller portion to the west belonging to Albania (less than 4 sq km). Due to the drop in water level in the Little Prespa, the part belonging to Albania has almost disappeared.
The traditional villages of the lakes are surrounded by mountain ranges, such as Varnountas in the east and Triklari (Wasp) in the south. The Great Prespa, surrounded by the impressive mountain range, communicates underground with Lake Ohrid, and the water level of the two lakes sometimes changes.
